Album Review: While She Sleeps – This is the Six
While She Sleeps is a metallic hard-core band from Sheffield, England. This is the Six is the band’s first studio full-length album that was released on August 13th, 2012 (via. The End Records). The album is a follow-up to their mini-debut The North Stands for Nothing (2010), which is when the band started to get noticed. While She Sleeps has only been a band since 2006 and at this point — they can’t be stopped. The band received best British newcomer at the Kerrang! Awards just last year and they have been added to the Vans Warped Tour line-up for 2013. This is the Six highlights the dynamics of what the band is capable of with a wide range of; melodic guitar tones, power-filled guitar riffs, thick bass, serenading piano interludes, catchy gang vocals and rough-passionate screams.
The album sets things off with “Dead Behind Those Eyes”, which instantly rips you into the feel of the whole album; head-banging, heavy and catchy. The second song “False Freedom,” invites new harmonies and more indifferent vocals that lead to a slowed-down, passionate feel with choir sounding gang vocals. The album keeps you engaged, especially with songs like “Seven Hills” that seems to separate itself from the others. The guitar harmonies sing to you, while the fast-paced drums make you want to move. The gang vocals will have you singing along from the very first time you hear them and after walking away, they won’t leave your head. The track is then followed by “Our Courage Our Cancer” which introduces us to the bands capability of writing slower, more heart-felt songs. The song starts off with a stunning piano intro that is then unified into a heavier yet calm mood that allows you to lose yourself in the music. The second half of the album brings even more heavy-sentiment, especially during “Love at War”- This song will bring you up and down with a steady combination of everything that makes the album adoring.
While She Sleeps, This is the Six take listeners on an emotional rollercoaster. You can tell that these guys put their heart into every second of it – which in turn causes you to want to hold on with them throughout the entire ride.
The band has announced they will be co-headlining Parkway Drive’s Atlas North American Tour and they are scheduled to make it to Toronto’s Phoenix Concert Theatre on April 16th. The band will also be returning to the Molson Amphitheatre in Toronto on July 5th with the Vans Warped Tour.
