Photos: Young Magic @ The Garrison
Young Magic the experimental indie duo from Australia (now based out of New York City) stopped through Toronto and played their latest show at The Garrison in Ossington Village. If you’ve never heard of Young Magic then you definitely need to treat yourself and pick up their latest record ‘Melt’ (Car Park Records) and experience the mental mind trip that their music produces. The venue was dark and mystical much like their music. The crowd was aligned against the edges of the venue hiding in the dark, waiting to come forth and sway with the music. I stood by myself snapping photos during the first song “where is everyone?” I said to myself in my head. As the first song ended I noticed behind me that all of a sudden the crowd was all gathered in the middle of the floor, swaying back and forth, humming along to the trance like vocals. These fans didn’t just come forth to enjoy the set, they were summoned.
I photographed Young Magic in a very abstract way which I felt represented the feeling that I had while watching them and when listening to their music. They played with pretty much ZERO light other than a background projection so I kind of had no choice but to improvise and do something more creative than usual with the photos.
