Gig Review: El Ten Eleven @ The Garrison

El Ten Eleven

A week and a bit ago, I submitted a contribution to BTW’s Found Sounds for Los Angeles, California duo El Ten Eleven, making no effort to hide my enthusiasm for their beautiful blend of quiet calm and explosive energy – nor for the fact that I would be seeing them replicate it live, witnessing the band in their element at their Toronto show the following Friday. It’s been a good, long while since I last saw a live show (probably not something a guy writing a music review should admit), the most recent one going all the way back to…

El Ten Eleven

Los Angeles based ambient/experimental group El Ten Eleven graced the stage at The Garrison in Toronto on Friday April 19th, 2013. From Kristian Dunn’s double neck (bass/guitar) playing to Tim Fogarty’s impressive percussion skills, this show was mind blowing. Almost a two and a half hour set at The Garrison filled with Dunn’s mind altering loops and double neck madness, it was hard not to believe there were six musicians on stage playing. The fact that these two dudes (Dunn & Fogarty) can pull off a live show like this is more impressive than some of the biggest shows I’ve seen at…

Thursday night marked Julie Doiron & The Wrong Guys‘ final stop on their brief six city tour, with a show at The Garrison. Marking the release of their 7-inch the band (Julie, backed by Eamon McGrath and Jaye Schwarzer & Mike Peters of Cancer Bats) ripped through a set consisting of new material, along with revamped versions of songs from Julie’s back catalogue. With Cancer Bats hitting the road for an extensive tour in October, it’ll be some time before we can catch The Wrong Guys again. For those looking to get their Julie Doiron fix, be sure to catch…

Young Magic

Young Magic the experimental indie duo from Australia (now based out of New York City) stopped through Toronto and played their latest show at The Garrison in Ossington Village. If you’ve never heard of Young Magic then you definitely need to treat yourself and pick up their latest record ‘Melt’ (Car Park Records) and experience the mental mind trip that their music produces. The venue was dark and mystical much like their music. The crowd was aligned against the edges of the venue hiding in the dark, waiting to come forth and sway with the music. I stood by myself snapping…
