Album Review: Fitz and The Tantrums – More Than Just a Dream
Released: May 7, 2013 | Record Label: Warner Music Canada When Fitz and the Tantrums released their debut album Pickin’ Up the Pieces in 2010, they immediately garnered a strong cult following and critical praise, being labelled “a band to watch” by Rolling Stone, thanks to the success of “MoneyGraber” and “Don’t Gotta Work It Out,” which both became top 40 hits. Their mastery of Motown-esque melodies mixed with a pop style made Pickin’ Up the Pieces an album that refused to allow the listener to sit still. This became a sign of things to come because a Fitz and the Tantrums show can…
Gig Review: Paramore @ Sound Academy
On May 13th fans piled into a sold out Sound Academy in Toronto for Tennessee rockers, Paramore. The bands Toronto performance was part of their tour promoting their newly released self-titled album. The first band to take the stage was electronic rockers, Kitten. At this point the venue was already pretty full and fans were warming up to the bands upbeat tempo and charisma. Their singer Chloe Chaidez had fans moving along with her while she threw herself all over the stage. It was quite the spectacle. By the end of their set, most of the band jumped into the crowd,…

Photos: Foals @ Kool Haus
Oxford’s Foals were in Toronto to perform at the Kool Haus on Saturday May 11th, supporting their brand new studio album Holy Fire (via. Warner Music on February 4th, 2013). The night consisted of openers Blondfire and Surfer Blood and then of course the main attraction Foals, who destroyed the Kool Haus stage. Lead singer and guitarist Yannis Phillippakis was a mystery on stage – completely unpredictable. He would be so still and calm at times and then out of nowhere he’d be spinning and jumping, fully living in the moment of their music. It was great to see an entire band that into their music (not just Yannis). Great…

On Thursday May 9th, Beyond The Watch’s Steve St. Jean hit up Pie in The Sky Studios for Courage My Love’s brand new music video for their upcoming single “Know How”. Steve got the chance to spend a few hours behind the scenes watching the band in action with some intense “marionette” scenes; to them smashing the hell out of a car with a sledgehammer. The video was being directed by Award Winning Director Warren P. Sonoda, who had a great vision and concept for the music video. Trust us… everything we saw on the video monitors will blow you away. Courage My Love’s Mercedes Arn-Horn (Guitar/Vocals), Phoenix Arn-Horn (Drums) and new member Brandon…

On Tuesday May 7th, fans of all ages made their way down to the Sound Academy on what seemed like one of the nicest days in Toronto this year – all for a perfectly matched hard-rock line-up of; Stars In Stereo, Young Guns, Halestorm and the legendary Bullet For My Valentine. Kicking things off was Stars in Stereo, the female fronted band from Los Angeles, California was promoting their debut self-titled album that just came out (via Hundred Handed Records). Stars in Stereo had an amazing stage set-up, especially for an opening band and they definitely left the crowd wanting. Their…
Photos: Daughter @ The Great Hall
On Tuesday May 7th, Daughter made their way to Toronto’s The Great Hall in support of their brand new record If You Leave (via. Glassnote Records on April 30th, 2013). This leg of the tour featured opener Wilsen who can best be described as some sort of musical dreamscape. The bands dreamy folk rock fit perfectly as an opener for Daughter. Wilsen are currently on tour supporting their release Sirens, which they’ve deemed a “mini-album”. Their sound is anything but “mini”. It could’ve been the heat we were all enduring at The Great Hall, or maybe it’s because of the long wait, but by the time we finally heard Daughter break into their first song, the…
